Warren — At the July 3 Board of Selectmen's meeting, Richard "Rick" Butler was appointed to the vacant seat on the Regional School Unit 40 Board of Directors representing Warren.

Butler, a veteran of the Marines, works for the Department of Veterans Affairs at Togus in Augusta as a lead worker's compensation specialist for the VA New England Healthcare Network.

He also helps oversee the VA medical facilities at Manchester, N.H., White River Junction, Vt., Bedford, Mass., and Central Western Massachusetts VA in Leeds, Mass.

He recently ran for selectman in Warren.

Butler is a member of the Warren Days Committee and the Union Fair Society. He is the head designer for the Union Fair haunted “Trail of Terror” that takes place during select days in October. He said he is also an occasional member of the Midcoast Community Band, where he plays baritone saxophone.

Butler moved to Warren in 2013 with his wife, Shannon, who runs Hair By Shannon out of their home. The couple have five children -- twins who turn 18 this year, a 13-year-old daughter, a 27-year-old stepdaughter, and a 13-year-old stepson.

The interim appointment lasts until the town elections next June.
