ROCKPORT — The studio of artist and printmaker Kathleen Buchanan will be open to visitors on Saturday, Aug. 24, from noon to 6 p.m., at 11 Homestead Lane. Buchanan will be demonstrating her printing process, current work will be on display, and light refreshments provided.

Buchanan primarily works in the collagraph printing medium. This is a contemporary print process where she constructs a sturdy collage of cut paper and acrylic mediums. Ink is then rubbed onto the collage and run through an etching press to make the print. Visitors are also welcome to create a simple print of their own while at the studio.

Much of her inspiration comes from outdoor adventuring along the Maine coast, as well as time spent along the west coast of Ireland. Buchanan was awarded a residency fellowship at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Co. Mayo, Ireland in 2015, most recently working there this past June.

Her work has been featured in Yankee Magazine, Maine the Way, Maine Home and Design, and in textbooks on the collagraph printing process. She exhibits in galleries in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, and her work is held in public collections including the Boston Athenaeum and the Ballinglen Museum of Contemporary Art.
