Rockland — Nearly 60 people participated in the sixth annual Karen's "Energy 4 Life" run/walk on Saturday, Sept. 30, an event that centered around the Maritime Farms store on Route 73 in the south side of the city on a glorious early-fall morning.

The event raised money to help those with cancer.

Lucas Brower, 28, of Boston, Mass. (he grew up in Camden) finished first overall as he covered the 3.1-mile course around the city streets in 21:19. He bested the field by more than a minute.

Whitney Greene, 52, was the first female to cross the course, as she was ninth in 26:06.

In its first five years, the "Energy 4 Life" program, in the memory of Karen Ware and sponsored by Martime Energy, raised and donated more than $100,000 to The Maine Cancer Foundation.

The money raised goes to The Maine Cancer Foundation directed towards cancer research and the "Energy 4 Life" program to help Midcoast families deal with cancer.

The first run/walk was September 2012.

The event was started by Susan Ware Page and Rebecca Ware McLaughlin, with the guidance of Russ Wolfertz, in memory of Susan's and Rebecca's mother, Karen, who died of colon cancer in 2010. Susan Page Ware is the president of Maritime Energy.

The individual results (which do not include the names of all the registered walkers) included: 1, L.
