Rockport — Local author Sam Brandon’s second novel, “Svengali,” is available on The novel revolves around Christian Sterling, an American icon: a famed defense attorney and best-selling author who has never lost a case.

A darling of the media, Sterling has been nicknamed the Svengali of the Courtroom … which is why Kelly Wilde, only heir of her Silicon Valley billionaire parents, begs him to represent her when she is accused of their double murder. Risking his perfect record, Sterling reluctantly accepts the assignment but one of his conditions is that Kelly, a well-documented party girl and drug addict, must stay with him at his Big Sur ranch.

Over a few months, Sterling transforms Kelly into a clean, fit model citizen. They start to fall in love … and Sterling starts to wonder if he's the one being manipulated. San Francisco police detectives soon discover layers to the crime, leading to a climatic courtroom case and fiery conclusion.

Last summer, Brandon released his debut novel, the set-in-Rockland “Dead of Winter.” He currently is writing a sequel, also set locally.
