Rockland — “Books and Authors,” a regular feature on Channel 7 for Rockland-area Time Warner Cable viewers, has a new program featuring an interview with city native and local author John Bird about his book “Rockland, Maine’s Tidal Turn,” published by Rockland-based Maine Authors Publishing Company.

The program will begin airing starting Monday, Dec. 17 at 2 pm and again at 9 p.m. Additional information is available on Channel 7's website, mainecoast.tv. Bird's book is available at local bookstores and gift shops, as well as online at Amazon.com.

Bird was interviewed by Wayne Gray, the program's producer. On camera, Bird details Rockland's recent economic and cultural revitalization following several decades of economic decline, with an emphasis on the people who fueled the city's resurgence.

As Bird points out, thanks to the efforts of a combination of civic-minded natives and newcomers who invested their time and resources, in the last 20 years Rockland has gone from being a place one passes through to get somewhere else to a destination. He honors them as "local heroes." Many photographs from various periods in Rockland's colorful history are featured as Bird delves into the stories behind the ebbs and flows of the city’s evolution.

John Bird is a local treasure for Rockland and his book ROCKLAND, MAINE'S TIDAL TURN is definitely worth space on any Rocklander's shelf of books about the city and Knox County. I'm about half-way through it down here in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and am enjoying it immensely.

Merry Christmas, John.  I hope you're thinking about writing another book.
