Bolshoi Ballet offers new ‘Romeo and Juliet’

Rockland — A new production of “Romeo and Juliet,” performed by the Bolshoi Ballet, will be presented as a live high-definition broadcast from Moscow Sunday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Strand Theatre, 345 Main St.

The familiar story is set In Verona, Italy. Romeo and Juliet fall madly in love while their respective families, the Montagues and the Capulets, are caught in a bitter rivalry, ending in heart-wrenching tragedy. Alexei Ratmansky, former artistic director of the Bolshoi, stages the company’s premiere of his production with dramatic urgency and a fresh re-telling of Shakespeare’s beloved classic. His adaptation is set to Sergei Prokofiev’s romantic and cinematic score.

The Bolshoi Ballet is an internationally renowned classical ballet company, based at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia. Founded in 1776, it is among the world's oldest ballet companies.
