Bluegrass Jam Camp is back

Sep 05, 2018
Erica Brown & the Bluegrass Connection will provide some of the faculty of the second annual Vacationland Bluegrass Jam Camp.

Searsport — The nonprofit Makers Guild of Maine invites bluegrass pickers and those who want to learn how to play bluegrass music to learn jamming from some of Maine’s best bluegrass musicians Friday through Sunday, Sept. 14 through 16, at Searsport Shores Campground, 216 West Main St./Route 1.

Now in its second year, Vacationland Bluegrass Jam Camp will include Erica Brown, Matt Shipman and Steve Roy, all from the band Erica Brown & the Bluegrass Connection, teaching fiddle, guitar and ukulele. They will be joined by Baron Collins-Hill on mandolin, Eli Gilbert on banjo, Emily Randolph on bass and Emma Theobalds, teaching voice.

Musicians new to bluegrass will have a chance to learn more about the genre at the special Novice Workshop taught by Randolph, starting Friday at 10 a.m. The novice track will continue through the weekend with teacher-led slow jams and beginner guitar workshops.

The weekend will include classroom instruction, hours of jamming and a teacher concert featuring Erica Brown and Friends. Searsport Shores Campground will fire up its wood-fired pizza oven for a “bring your own toppings” pizza dinner Friday night; and also will provide lunch on Saturday.

The camp takes place on the shores of Penobscot Bay with ocean side camping, kayaking and hiking trails.

Scholarships are available to musicians younger than 18; and work exchange scholarships are available to adults willing to help out in exchange for reduced tuition.  Students have the option to register for the entire weekend; the Novice Workshop only; and/or Saturday only. For more information, call Randolph at 230-4459; email vacationlandjamcamp@gmail.com; or visit regonline.com/vacationlandjamcamp2018.

The weekend is sponsored by the Makers Guild of Maine, dedicated to bringing all aspects of the arts to the coast of Maine.
