Sep 15, 2018
Dame Judi Dench stars in “Last of the Blond Bombshells,” a BBC film with a true ensemble cast.

Thomaston — Friends of the Thomaston Public Library’s weekly Friday Night Film Series presents free 7 p.m. screenings at the library, in the historic Thomaston Academy building, 60 Main St./Route 1.

September is Never Too Old month. Up next, on Sept. 21, is “Last of the Blonde Bombshells” (2000, USA/UK-TV). After Elizabeth's husband dies, she begins to play her tenor saxophone again … and remembers when she was 15 and a member of the Blonde Bombshells, an all-girl (with one exception) swing band. Accompanied by the exception (Sir Ian Holm), and urged on by her granddaughter, Elizabeth (Dame Judi Dench) hunts up all the old members of the band and urges them to perform. Other great dames in the cast include Dame Cleo Laine, Joan Sims, Olympia Dukakis and Leslie Caron.

The film is rated PG-13 and runs 103 minutes. This month’s series will conclude Sept. 28 with “Love Among the Ruins” (1975, UK-TV). Admission is free.
