Augusta — If the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championship game between Oceanside and Maranacook of Readfield was any indication, the high school boys basketball teams could be tough outs in their regional tournaments.

The Mariners and Black Bears squared off on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Cony High School and, while the Mariners cut their deficit to four points in the third quarter, could not overtake the Black Bears and saw Maranacook collect the conference title by a 71-60 score.

Maranacook maintained a comfortable lead throughout the 32-minute affair and never trailed, leading 21-13, 37-27 and 51-46 at the quarter breaks.

Cooper Wirkala paced Oceanside with a game-high 32 points, while Amos Anderson added 14; Trevor Reed, six; Jack Lombardo, five; and Elliot Lucier, three.

Cash McClure led Maranacook with 28 points, while Mitch Root added 16; Duncan Rogers, eight; Aric Belanger, seven; Skyler Boucher, four; Jarred Schmidt and Elijas Bergdahl, three; and Tim Worster, two.

The Mariners were 10-of-16 (62 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Black Bears were 14-of-16 (87 percent).

Now, the teams hope to make noise in their regional tournaments.

Oceanside (13-5), the No. 4 seed in Class B North, will face No. 5 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield (14-4) on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 10:35 a.m. at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Maranacook (16-2), the No. 2 seed in Class B South, will face No. 7 Yarmouth (8-10) on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the Portland Expo.

During the regular season, the Mariners and Black Bears split home games, as Oceanside won 66-60 on Dec. 11 and Maranacook 58-55 on Jan. 22.
