Big winner in library summer reading program

Oct 06, 2017

Ashwood Waldorf School fourth-grade student Gabriella DeStefano of Rockland, daughter of Rebecca Jacobs and Carmine DeStefano, won a bicycle this summer in the Rockland Public Library's summer reading program.

She, along with close to 100 readers, participated in “Build a Better World,” which occurred June 24 through Aug. 12. Parents helped their children choose an appropriate and challenging reading goal; once they met their goal, they were entered into a raffle for a new bicycle. The Masonic Members of Knox Lodge 189 donated a total of 10 bicycles, along with helmets, for the participants.

Every person who met their reading goal was presented with a bag full of prizes donated by The Friends of the Rockland Public Library and Walmart; each bag always includes a new hard-cover book. The Rockland Public Library holds a summer reading program each summer for all ages, babies to adults.

DeStefano set a goal of 25 books and read 26 in eight weeks, including two from the Harry Potter series, a number of Magic Treehouse chapter books, and the classic, "A Wrinkle in Time."
