Rockland — Downtown Rockland was bustling Wednesday morning, Sept. 11, helped by the arrival of 450 bicyclists and their supporters.

BikeMaine's annual ride this year had the participants and their families and friends arrive in Rockland Tuesday afternoon and spend their layover day, Wednesday, in the city. The riders are scheduled to depart Thursday morning, Sept. 12.

The visitors are staying in tents at Snow Marine Park.

Gordon Page, executive director of Rockland Main Street Inc., said the downtown was feeling the impact from the visitors.

"Every breakfast-related business downtown was slammin' and jammin' this morning, and the street was packed last night during the dinner period," Page said.

He said a ukulele group he performs with was playing downtown Tuesday evening and welcoming visitors. He said the visitors were impressed with Rockland.

As an aside, Page noted the ukulele group collected $110 from donations last night that will be donated to the Midcoast Music Academy.

The ride this year began in Waterville Sept. 8 and ended on the first day at Alford Lake Camp in Hope. Day two took riders to Damariscotta. Riders will head from Rockland to Belfast and finish the ride back in Waterville.

Page pointed out that it will be seven to eight years before BikeMaine will again hold its annual ride through Rockland, and this was a great opportunity to showcase the city.

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine organizes the annual ride.
