Rockport — The silent auction held at the Best of the Best gala Nov. 14 at the Samoset Resort raised more than $7,800 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, enough to provide a child's wish.

The event, sponsored by Courier Publications, brought together about 90 local vendors for a showcase of award winners from the Midcoast business community. About 300 local businesses were selected to win Best of the Best awards in 133 categories this year.

"Each year we’ve asked our newspaper readers and website visitors to tell us who they feel represents the best in business and nonprofit organizations," said Courier Publications Vice President of Sales and Marketing John Viehman. "The results truly reflect how customers see things, and there’s no better feedback than that. Not surprisingly, Best of the Best has become the 'Seal of Excellence' for Midcoast businesses and organizations."

The process starts in early August with a ballot published in the paper and online. The votes are tallied by late September, and the winners are announced in late October.

The Business of the Year Award went to Salty Waves Salon of Rockland. Viehman presented the award to owner Tonya Carter at the event.

"Our gala event is an opportunity for the winners to showcase their award-winning products and services," Viehman said. "Best of all, we created a silent auction to fund a wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Last year’s wish sent a 5-year-old girl with cancer and her family to Disney World. And we’re proud to have just finished this year’s auction, which raised funds for another wish in 2019."

Items auctioned off for this cause included electronics, jewelry, valuable art work, vacation packages, gift certificates and even a lawn mower.

Those who attended the event enjoyed free samples of food from local restaurants, along with gift bags, gift certificates and opportunities to participate in drawings to win free goods and services from numerous local businesses who won Best of the Best awards.

The event was organized by the Courier sales team in partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
