Rockland — The 2019 - 2020 Metropolitan Opera’s Live-in-HD season of broadcasts from Lincoln Center to the Strand Theatre, 345 Main St., continues on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 1 p.m. with a simulcast of "Wozzeck," a new Met production. An encore broadcast will be presented on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m.

Berg’s 20th-century shocker stars baritone Peter Mattei in the title role, with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium and soprano Elza van den Heever as the long-suffering Marie. Groundbreaking visual artist and director William Kentridge unveils a bold new staging set in an apocalyptic wasteland.

"Wozzeck" premiered at the Staatsoper, Berlin in 1925. One of the emblematic achievements of the thriving artistic forces in Germany and Austria during the brief period between world wars, "Wozzeck" was a sensation and a scandal at its premiere. Remarkably, it has lost none of its power to fascinate, shock and engage audiences, and its status as one of the defining musical works of the 20th century has not blunted its vitality.
