Bay Chamber opens 2018 summer season

Jul 04, 2018
Pianist Gilles Vonsattel will perform the opening night concert of Bay Chamber’s summer season.

Rockport — Bay Chamber Concerts’ Summer 2018 Concert Series and Screen Door Festival program will run July 12 through Aug. 19. Bay Chamber will present more than 30 events in Rockport and Camden, spanning many musical genres.

The season is ignited by the creativity of more than 70 composers; 65 performers playing more than 20 different instruments; and by the commitment and imagination of the audience.  Light permeates the concert programming beginning with the opening A Kindling concert featuring Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award-winning pianist Gilles Vonsattel Thursday, July 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Rockport Opera House. The opening week of concerts also features the Rolston String Quartet and oboist James Austin Smith, all of whom figure in the two Friday, July 13, Café Nights concerts at nearby Union Hall at 6 and 8:30 p.m.

Bay Chamber favorites Geoff Nuttall, Livia Sohn and Pedja Muzijevic are back, offering an Austro-German Luster program and the popular Candlelit Baroque concert. Grammy-nominated flutist Tara Helen O’Connor’s Enlightenment program will feature major works by Mozart and Haydn; and cellist Joshua Roman’s new “Tornado,” performed with contemporary music’s JACK Quartet. The season will culminate with Britten’s “Les Illuminations” featuring Palaver Strings and astonishingly talented tenor Nicholas Phan.

In addition to familiar names, many artists are set to make their Bay Chamber debuts, notably Icelandic cellist Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir; 2014 Sphinx Competition-winning double bassist Xavier Foley; the JACK Quartet; trailblazing pianist Conrad Tao; and luminous clarinetist Yoonah Kim, as well as Screen Door resident ensembles The Westerlies brass quartet and Altius String Quartet.

The Bach for Breakfast series features the formidable Christopher Houlihan exploring the great organ works of J.S. Bach at Camden’s First Congregational Church. Also on the summer schedule are free community concerts including a performance in Rockport Marine Park by Creative Ensemble Collective; a recital by cellist Christopher Costanza, at Zoot Café; and a free concert on Megunticook Lake Saturday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m. featuring Yasser Tejeda & Palotré, the leading quartet on the Afro-Dominican jazz scene fusing Dominican roots music with jazz, blues, funk and rock. They will play on a dock where boaters, kayakers and even paddle boarders can join the audience flotilla.
