Barter visits Barnswallow Books

Jul 12, 2018
“Novi” is a recent acrylic on board by Philip Barter.

Rockport — Barnswallow Books, 166 Russell Ave., will host the noted painter Philip Barter, dubbed Maine’s “painter laureate” by one reviewer, Friday, July 20, at 5:30 p.m.

Barter will talk about Carl Little’s recent book “Philip Barter: Forever Maine,” about his life, his career and his work. The book highlights a choice selection of Barter’s increasingly abstract inclinations in depicting Maine landscapes, from the coastal estuaries and blueberry barrens to the western mountains and lakes.

Barter’s paintings feature in the collections of the Portland Museum of Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland and Bowdoin College in Brunswick. He has been profiled in Down East magazine and on Charles Kuralt’s “CBS Sunday Morning.”
