Barbara Santa-Coloma

Vinalhaven — Barbara Catherine Santa-Coloma, nee Antoni, was born Sept. 30, 1933, and died July 11, 2017. Barbara was born in New York City and was the daughter of Peter and Margaret Antoni. She and her brothers, John and Peter, grew up on the streets of Brooklyn, N.Y. Young "Bobbie" was a tomboy, playing stickball in the streets with her brothers and friends, and probably knew every fact about every baseball team, especially her favorite Brooklyn Dodgers, at a time when many other little girls had other interests.

Barbara also knew she loved art at an early age, and entered the High School of Music and Arts. After graduation, she was accepted to the prestigous Cooper Union in Manhattan. She was married to Richard Santa-Coloma from 1952 to 1974, and they had two children, Emilia and Richard, who survive her. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sean, Clare, Kristina, Nic, Alex and Benjamin.

Barbara spent a life in art, with her work in collages and watercolors appearing in galleries and art shows up and down the East Coast. She was also an avid sailor, boat builder, and skier (she was a ski-patrolwoman in the 1970s). Barbara lived and worked for more than 40 years with her partner, artist and engineer Lars Olsen, who survives her.

Barbara will be memorialized in a private family ceremony on Vinalhaven, her home, which she loved. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a free thinker, living her life as she chose, without regard to the expectations and pressures of society.

Memorial gifts may be made in her name to the Islands Community Medical Services, and/or the Union Church in Vinalhaven, and would be appreciated.

Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at Arrangements are with Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Camden.
