Waldoboro Adult Coed Softball League

Back on top: Benchwarmers prove resilient, top Brooks Trap Mill for crown

No. 4 squad rebounds from earlier playoff loss to sweep No. 1, defending champs in final fall diamond clashes

Waldoboro — If there is perhaps one word that best describes the Knox County Benchwarmers it might be resilient.

However, it takes many positive words to properly explain the championship-driven team and how it, year after year and season after season, realizes success on the softball field.

The Benchwarmers are, of course, talented. Plenty talented. But they also are determined. Hungry. Competitive. And possess an admirable never-give-up attitude. They play hard from the first to the final pitch of each game, whether it be a scrimmage or the league championship. They do not hang their heads, they lift them — and each other — time after time after time.

The Benchwarmers, established in 2006, play the same no matter what the scoreboard shows. If ahead, they play hard. If they are behind, they play hard. No matter the score, Knox County always believes it has a chance to win. Until the final out is made.

And no team is better at making an opponent pay for mistakes or who give it extra outs.

All those attributes have been demonstrated for years on fields around the area — even the state — and again were on full display throughout the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4, as the No. 4 Benchwarmers worked their diamond magic to win a third Waldoboro Adult Coed Softball League title.

Knox County also won league crowns in 2013 and 2018, while it has finished second a bundle of times, including last year.

The Benchwarmers were not about to allow another opportunity to win a local league title slip through their fingers and played inspired softball two straight days over eight games, especially in the final two contests against No. 1 and defending champion Brooks Trap Mill (12-3).

The Benchwarmers (14-4, including 7-1 in the postseason) used powerful offense, aggressive base running and tremendous — borderline sensational — defense to grab a crown that eluded them in 2019.

The Benchwarmers finished the season outscoring opponents 249-110.

Winning a title in the popular, 13-team Waldoboro fall league must have felt like a bit of redemption for Knox County, not only because it lost to Brooks Trap Mill in last year's championship (after the Benchwarmers worked back through the loser's bracket following an opening postseason game loss), but also because Knox County was undefeated and ranked No. 1 before losing the final two games of the Mid-Coast Co-Ed Softball League postseason in August.

It was a chance to finish as unbeaten league champs and it slipped through the Benchwarmers fingers. That was not about to happen again on Sunday.

Over the weekend in the double-elimination playoff tournament, the Benchwarmers bounced back from an earlier loss to Brooks Trap Mill to beat the No. 1 squad 6-4 in the championship game and 11-3 in the game leading to a winner-take-all finale, both on Sunday afternoon.

The Benchwarmers include Lee Smith, Becca Smith, Mike Wong, Robin Carter, Jordan Carter, Jason Yates, Tim Jackson, Jenn Daniels, Sara Cullity, Dylan Maloney, Jay Young, Chris Burns, Jessie Veilleux and manager Lilly Smith.

Brooks Trap Mill includes Hallie Kunesh, Ryan Allender, Ryan Blackman, Carlos Arteaga, Wes Lash, Andrew Simmons, Cole Chase, Colton Spear, Mike Jameson, Ashley Geel, Mikey Jameson, Eric Hunt and Sarah Cowan.

Mike Jameson pitched the final two games for Brooks and Jackson worked the circle for the Benchwarmers.

In the championship game at John Foster Little League Field (across from Miller School), Brooks jumped out early but the Benchwarmers rallied to pull out the victory.

Both teams made a bundle of stellar defensive plays in the final two games, including robbing home runs with catches against fences, running down balls in the gaps and diving for grounders in the infield and making strong throws to bases for outs.

For the Benchwarmers, who scored one run in the third inning, two in the fifth and three in the sixth, Jordan Carter (2 singles, run), Robin Carter (single, double, run), Yates (single), Veilleux (home run, 3 RBIs), Wong (single, triple, run), Jackson (single, home run, 2 RBIs, run), Young (single, double, run), Maloney (single), Lee Smith (single) and Burns (single, RBI) led the offense.

Veilleux belted a pivotal three-run home run to left field in the sixth inning  just out of the reach of Chase's leap at the fence to propel the champs to the victory.

For Brooks, which scored one run in the second inning and three in the fifth, Chase (3 singles, RBI), Arteaga (home run, RBI), Simmons (single, double, run), Allender (single), Geel (2 singles), Blackman (home run, RBI, run), Jameson (RBI) and Spear (2 singles, run) keyed the plate work.

In the game leading to the championship, the Benchwarmers used their powerful bats to grab the early momentum and built on that cushion, leading 11-0 at one point. The champs scored one run in the first inning, three in the third, two in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Leading the offense were Jordan Carter (single, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, 3 runs), Jason Yates (2 singles, triple, 2 runs), Veilleux (2 singles, 2 RBIs, run), Wong (single, RBI), Daniels (single, RBI), Jackson (single), Young (triple, run), Maloney (single, run, RBI), Lee Smith (single, run) and Burns (2 singles, 2 runs).

For Brooks, which scored its runs in the seventh inning, Chase (single, run), Cowan (run), Allender (home run, 3 RBIs, run), Arteaga (single), Blackman (single), Spear (single), Hunt (single) and Simmons (single) had strong at-bats.

During the regular season, Brooks Trap Mill outlasted the Benchwarmers 13-9 in the only prior meeting between the squads.

The following are the outcomes of other weekend postseason games, with only scores of Benchwarmer games available: No. 4 Knox County Benchwarmers 22, No. 13 Maine-ly Pawn 1; No. 4 Knox County Benchwarmers 10, No. 5 Barstow Farms 4; No. 1 Brooks Trap Mill 10, No. 4 Knox County Benchwarmers 6; No. 4 Knox County Benchwarmers 8, No. 2 Lil’ Truckahs 2; No. 4 Knox County Benchwarmers 14, No. 5 Barstow Farms 2; No. 4 Knox County Benchwarmers 20, No. 7 Hi-Tech Communications 5; No. 7 Hi-Tech Communications beat No. 10 Waggy’s Woodwork; No. 6 B52’s beat No. 11 Bonnie’s Place; No. 5 Barstow Farms beat No. 12 DX; No. 8 Strong Agency beat No. 9 Hammerheads; No. 2 Lil’ Truckahs versus No. 7 Hi-Tech Communications beat No. 2 Lil’ Truckahs; No. 6 B52’s beat No. 3 ABI Masonry; No. 1 Brooks Trap Mill beat No. 8 Strong Agencyr; No. 7 Hi-Tech Communications beat No. No. 6 B52’s; No. 1 Brooks Trap Mill beat No. 7 Hi-Tech Communications; No. 12 DX beat No. 13 Maine-ly Pawn; No. 12 DX beat No. 3 ABI Masonry; No. 2 Lil’ Truckahs beat No. 9 Hammerheads; No. 8 Strong Agency beat No. 10 Waggy’s Woodwork; No. 5 Barstow Farms beat No. 11 Bonnie’s Place; No. 2 Lil’ Truckahs beat No. 12 DX; No. 5 Barstow Farms beat No. 8 Strong Agency; and No. 5 Barstow Farms beat No. 6 B52’s.

The five-week-long league began on Sunday, Aug. 23 as 13 teams looked to establish strong position in the standings. Then, the double-elimination playoffs were on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4, with 25 games played.

Regular-season games during the week and Sundays were played at John Foster and Sukeforth fields in Waldoboro. The venues are within a half-mile of one another and also were used for the postseason.

This season, games, of course, were played during a pandemic and league safety protocols were followed.

Last season, Brooks Trap Mill defeated Knox County Benchwarmers to win the league championship.

The final 2020 regular-season standings, with team, record, winning percentage and runs scored and runs allowed listed in parenthesis, included: Brooks Trap Mill, 9-1, .900 winning percentage (129-52); Lil’ Truckahs, 8-2, .800 (121-46); ABI Masonry, 8-2, .776 (112-69); Knox County Benchwarmers, 7-3, .700 (150-79); Barstow Farms, 7-3, .700 (106-33); B52’s, 7-3, .700 (113-87); Hi-Tech Communications Rednecks, 5-5, .500 (109-110); Strong Agency, 5-5, .500 (118-121); Hammerheads, 4-6, .375 (79-91); Waggy’s Woodwork, 3-7, .300 (70-126); Bonnie’s Place, 1-9, .100 (55-158); DX, 1-9, .111 (61-145); and Maine-ly Pawn, 0-10, .000 (50-156).
