Back in action: Windjammers, Vikings sail to fast starts on pitch

Oceanside boys, island girls fall short to open seasons

The start of the high school soccer regular seasons brought with them a mixed bag of results, but positive news for Camden Hills and one of the island teams.

Camden Hills squads picked up where they left off last season with opening victories, as the defending state Class A champion girls beat host Messalonskee of Oakland 3-0, while the boys also posted a 5-1 home win.

The Vinalhaven-North Haven boys opened with a win over Greater Portland Christian School of South Portland 2-1, while the island girls fell 4-1 to the Lions.

The Oceanside boys also lost to Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 5-0.

Boys soccer

Camden Hills 5, Messalonskee 1

At Rockport Aug. 31, the Windjammer offense exploded for five goals in their opener.

Quinn Brown had a hat trick in the victory, while Michael Blackwell and Havana Lyman added a goal for Camden Hills. Bryce Tyler, Hugh Costigan and Sam Brownawell added assists for the winners.

Hunter Smith scored the Eagles’ lone goal.

The Windjammers outshot Messalonskee 18-8.

Matt Kremin made five stops in net for the Windjammers, while Carter Lambert made four saves in the Eagle goal.

“It's been a long preseason this year, and the boys were excited to get out on the pitch and show everyone how hard they have been working,” said Camden Hills coach Ryan Hurley. “It's always nice to start the new season on the right foot, and we did it in style today with some very nice goals and good all-around team defense. It was a total team effort from front to back against a Messalonskee team that will surely win their share of games this season.”

Girls soccer

Camden Hills 3, Messalonskee 0

At Oakland Aug. 31, the Windjammers ran their win streak to 16 dating to last season with a shutout of the Eagles.

Kristina Kelly, Ella Pierce and Eve Gutheinz scored goals for the reigning two-time state Class A champions. Kassie Krul and Kelly logged assists in the victory.

The Windjammers outshot Messalonskee 21-10 and had six corner kicks to the Eagles’ one.

Camden Hills had 10 saves in net, while the hosts made 20.
