Rockland — Chelsea Avirett has been nominated to fill a vacant Rockland seat on the Regional School Unit 13 Board.

Rockland Mayor Lisa Westkaemper has recommended Avirett for the post that had been held by Vera Roberts, who did not seek election Nov. 6. No candidate ran for the seat.

Avirett, a Fulton Street resident, would serve through November 2019.

She is a local freelance writer and teacher. She and her husband moved to Rockland in 2013  from Madison, Wis., where she completed a doctorate in medieval English literature.

She has served as election warden in Rockland and serves on the city personnel board.

The full City Council will vote on the nomination Dec. 10.

Rockland has five seats on the 10-member RSU 13 Board that includes Rockland, Thomaston, Owls Head, South Thomaston and Cushing.

Excellent nomination, Mayor Westkaemper!  I could not imagine a better representative advocating for our improving future through education.  Period!
