Archaeologist to talk about local digs Oct. 8

Sep 20, 2019
Harbour Mitchell speaks to the Thomaston Historical Society Oct. 8.

Thomaston — Harbour Mitchell will offer a short, informative talk on the digs he has been working on recently Tuesday, Oct 8, at 7:30 p.m. at Watts Hall, 174 Main St. Also, people are encouraged to bring their finds from old “dumps” around their houses. After the talk Mitchell will help identify and possibly suggest the story behind these discarded gems or junk. This talk is sponsored by the Thomaston Historical Society and the Knox Museum.

Mitchell has been conducting archaeological explorations throughout New England, and especially in Maine, for several decades. In recent years, his focus has been on the world of Euro-American civilian development of the frontier in the late 18th and very early 19th centuries. In the summers of 2017 and 2018 he conducted an exploratory dig on Thatcher Street, behind the former sites of Montpelier and Fort St. Georges.

The building will open at 7 for refreshments and socializing.
