Appleton — Appleton Village School middle schoolers did their best to roll out the red carpet of welcome and appreciation to local veterans in their annual Veterans Day celebration Thursday, Nov. 9. Veterans serving in the Navy, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Air Force were all represented and welcomed with smiling faces, a hearty handshake, goodies and coffee.

Once bellies were full, veterans were invited to sit down with several students from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades to share their stories in an informal interview session. Then, everyone convened for a group panel discussion where common experiences were shared and lessons were passed along to the younger generation.

These pearls of wisdom included:

* Be kind and respectful of everyone you come into contact with, no matter their race, their upbringing, or differences

* Take responsibility for your actions and be honest with yourself and others

* Respect yourself, those around you, and the United States flag

With all the stories swirling in their heads, middle school students, along with the rest of the student body, entertained the veterans with several patriotic songs and a meal. It was a day to respect and honor those who have put so much on the line for our safety and that of our country.
