The Appleton Village School class of 2014 will have its ceremony at AVS on Thursday, June 19. The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. with appetizers and a slideshow at 5:30. The ceremony is open to the public. All are welcome.

The final school assembly and slideshow will be June 20, at 2:15 p.m. Parents are welcome to attend.

The last day of school for this year will be June 21. There will be a field day and school will release at 11:30 a.m.

The first day of school for the 2014/15 school year will be Sept. 2.

The School Committee met on Monday morning, June 9, to approve Susan Stilwell as the new principal of Appleton Village School. Mrs. Stilwell is currently the principal at both Thomaston Grammar School and Owls Head in RSU 13, and has more than 30 years of experience as an educator. She formerly worked at AVS as the technology coordinator and is very excited to be returning to our school as principal. Mrs. Stilwell will be working with retiring Principal Gary Bosk to ensure a smooth transition for the school and community. You will find her to be a passionate educational leader and a strong advocate for students and for all of the many wonderful programs already in place at AVS.

Appleton Library News

There will be a Chairitable Auction at the Appleton Library on Thursday, June 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. It will feature painted chairs from the original library and other donated wares. Donations are accepted; please bring them to the library. For more information contact Ellen Taylor at

Saturday, July 19, at 11 a.m. there will be a presentation by James L. Witherell, author of "Ed Muskie Made in Maine, 1914-1960."

There is going to be a Bikes for Books program that starts June 24 and ends Sept. 4, the more the kids read the more chances they have to win a bike! Thanks to a donation by the Masons there will be six Huffy bikes to raffle off! The raffle drawing will be on Sept. 6 and the closing party! Make sure you sign your kids up for this!

There is an ongoing book sale at the library. Stop by and see what book, puzzle or movie that you may find for sale.

On Saturday, July 13, the library will be open for anyone wishing to come during the Georges River Land Trust’s Garden Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will even be a bake sale going on!

Union Farmer’s Market

The Union Farmer’s Market is now open on Fridays from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Union Common. Stop by and support our local farmers and enjoy some farm fresh products!

Five Town Field Hockey News

Five Town Field Hockey Clinic will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the CHRHS field hockey field. The free clinic is for girls entering grades K-12 that reside within the five-town community. The clinic runs from June 24 to July 31. The clinic is designed to introduce new players to the sport, while challenging the returning players. Each session will include warm ups, stretches, drills, competitions/games and a scrimmage to apply what they have learned. For those who would like to participate, a registration form must be completed. The forms can be found in the main offices of: Lincolnville Central School, Appleton Village School, Hope Elementary School, Camden-Rockport Middle School and Camden-Rockport Elementary School.
