News from the Town Office

May 8 and 9, the Town Office will be closed, as staff will be away for a conference.

May 27 at 7 p.m. is the Five Town CSD School Budget Meeting at the high school in Rockport.

May 29 at 7 p.m. is the Appleton Village School Budget Meeting at Appleton Village School.

Scott Wiley and Christopher Collins both turned in nomination papers for Selectman (Scott Wiley is the current selectman).

The people who returned nomination papers for the Municipal Election, June 10, include; Planning Board for a 3-year term, David Kelley and Riley Fenner; Deborah Keiran for Appleton School Board; James McBrien Jr. for the Five Town CSD School Board member; and David Gould and Curtis Starrett for Road Commissioner (Curtis Starrett is the current Road Commissioner).

AVS News

Mr. Lufkin and Mrs. Thatcher-Hall are excited to announce the 2014 Art Stroll and Spring Concert on Thursday, May 8, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Parents, friends and community members are cordially invited to view artwork of AVS students between 5:30 and 6:30. At 6:30 we will gather in the gym for the concert and enjoy the singing voices of students in kindergarten through grade 2, grades 3 through 5, and our middle school chorus. Please join us for this celebration.

The next seniors to lunch will be May 12, at 11:30 a.m. For more information call the school at 785-4504.

The school-wide Battle of the Books event will take place next Friday, May 9. We will begin at 9:30 a.m. to support the fourth- and fifth-grade teams and at approximately 10:15 we will cheer on the sixth- through eighth-grade teams. Quite a few teams have signed up to participate this year and now’s the time to support them and their efforts. This fun-filled event will take place in the cafeteria at AVS. Come and join the fun! It has been decided that rather than coming in Monday, June 23, our final student day this year will be Saturday, June 21. Students will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. This will be the 175th student day of the year. It will also be “Field Day.”

Appleton Historical Society News

Saturday, May 10, is the annual Appleton Historical Society Plant Sale, at the library, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This Plant Sale is one of our fundraisers for the Historical Society and our Appleton Union Meetinghouse, and features plants and shrubs from our home gardens and from local growers. There are a wide variety of plants and this is a great opportunity to refresh your garden, exchange information on growing, and at the same time benefit the Meetinghouse, which soon needs painting and some structural repairs.

Grace and Grit 5k

This past weekend there was a 5k run in Rockland to benefit Bobbi Jo Denman, who has breast cancer. Bobbi Jo and her husband Jim, live in Appleton. There were a lot of people that came out to support Bobbi Jo and her family. What a great way for us in the community to show our support to others who are going through difficult times!

Teen Center Fundraiser

A Mother’s Day Pasta Dinner is scheduled for Friday, May 9, 6 to 9 p.m., $6/person, at the Teen Center, 10 Knowlton St., Camden. Mothers, grandmothers and aunts will be honored with a night off from cooking. There will be a fun activity and movie along with a pasta dinner with all the trimmings. All proceeds help keep Teen Center memberships and programs free for youth in grades 5 through 12. For more information, call 236-0866.
