Rockport — Both teams held double-digit leads. Both responded to adversity.

In the third quarter tempers flared — which heightened the tension between the Midcoast rivals — but cooler heads prevailed.

All in all, it was another chapter between longstanding high school boys basketball adversaries Oceanside and host Camden Hills on the hardwood on Friday night, Dec. 13. One that saw the visiting Mariners pull away in the fourth quarter and past the Windjammers to a 66-56 victory.

The win improved Oceanside to 2-1, while Camden Hills fell to 0-3.

It was also a showdown between two new area varsity coaches in Oceanside’s Larry Reed and Camden Hills’ Jon Moro. Longtime Windjammer coach Jeff Hart resigned in the offseason and is now the school’s athletic director, while Mariner coach Matt Breen resigned in October to take the school’s girls varsity post.

In Friday’s new-look showdown, Camden Hills jumped to a 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, while Oceanside rallied to take a 30-26 advantage at halftime and clung to a 46-45 edge after three quarters.

The Mariners had four players in double-figures and were led by Cam Kingsbury’s 13-point effort, while Nate Coombs and Bohdi Ames added 12; Elliot Lucier, 11; Everett Allyn, nine; Gavyn Tower, five; and Drew Daggett, four.

Aiden Schecter paced the Windjammers with 18 points, while Jeremy Fraser added 13; Skye Abaldo, eight; Ryan Clifford, seven; Josh Pearse and Jon Runnion-Bareford, three; and Casey Messer and Andrew Proscia, two.

Oceanside netted 18-of-31 (58 percent) attempts from the charity stripe, while Camden Hills converted 4-of-7 (57 percent).

The free-throw line played a significant role in the outcome as the the visitors outscored the hosts 18-4 from the charity stripe.

The Windjammers pounced on the Mariners in the first quarter when Schecter hit a trey to make it 12-3 with 2:01 to go in the stanza before Pearse driled an open trey from the wing as the buzzer sounded to give the hosts a 10-point lead.

But the Mariners knotted the score in a hurry and got to work when Kingsbury scored the first five points of the second quarter with a 3-pointer and two foul shots, but a bucket by Abaldo put Camden Hills’ lead at 17-10.

Oceanside then scored the next seven points to tie the game off a floater in the paint by Allyn, two free throws from Ames and Lucier's trey with 5:30 to go.

After Proscia and Ames traded hoops, Coombs rattled off seven in a row — off a three-point play and rare four-point play — to give the Mariners a 26-19 lead.

Not to be outdone, the Windjammers got seven in a row after a Schecter layup, a trey by Fraser and a scoop and score near midcourt by Messer as the hosts quickly tied the score 1:50 to play in the stanza.

While Lucier and Ames ended the half with four straight points, Schecter's hoop and two Fraser foul shots tied the score early in the third.

Neither team led by more than six points in the quarter, which saw Allyn and Fraser get into a minor tussle as time wound down in the stanza as the players jockeyed for a loose ball. That play heightened the urgency for the squads in the tightly-contested game.

However, the Mariners seized control in the fourth — to the tune of a 10-0 run that saw the Windjammers held scoreless through the first 4:30 of the stanza — as the visitors slowly pulled away.

Kingsbury buried a jumper from the foul line, while Allyn forced a Camden Hills turnover at midcourt — and found Coombs streaking to the basket for a hoop — to put the Mariners up 50-45.

The Windjammers committed an player-control foul on the next possession and the Mariners turned that into an interior hoop by Ames after Kingsbury penetrated and drew the defense, which prompted a Camden Hills timeout.

Allyn added another basket and Kingsbury two free throws to make the score 56-45 with less than three minutes to play.

Schecter canned a 3-pointer with 2:01 to bring Camden Hills within 59-50, but the hosts got no closer.
