Rockland — Golf is difficult enough, but when Mother Nature tosses major curveballs such as saturated ground, wind, rain and even hail into the mixture, it can be nearly impossible.

But that is what the nearly 40 who participated in the two-day, 36-hole sixth annual Seacoast Security Golf Classic, an amateur stroke-play tournament, on Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23 at the Goose River and Rockland golf courses, faced for at least part of the weekend.

See a bundle additional photos below.

While Sunday's final round conditions were better — with sunny, skies and warm temperatures — the course still was plenty wet and golf balls often plugged in fairways. Roll, important for distance (especially on drives), was nearly non-existent.

Additionally, Saturday's opening round, played at the difficult, hilly Goose River course, had a four-hour delay due to the deluge of rain that swamped the Midcoast the days prior — on top of an already horrendously wet spring.

And, to top it, on Saturday, there were periods of rain and even hail. Weird weather, to be sure.

However, the hardy souls forged on and, when the dust (mud?) settled, a familiar name sat atop the leaderboard.

James Anderson used his impressive all-around skills to work through the difficult conditions and finish first gross overall at 79-71 —150. He bested Chip Allen, a former champion, who was second at 78-73—151, by a stroke.

It was the second straight year Anderson had outlasted Allen by a shot for the crown. And the two played in the same group each day over the weekend so knew where they stood hole to hole.

In this year's tourney, Allen was one stroke better on the first day and Anderson two shots better on the second day.

The other first gross finishers in each flight were: Mike Schroeder in the second flight, Mark Anderson in the third flight, Larry Goldsmith in the senior first flight and Mike Weatherwax in the second senior flight.

James Anderson had the best round of the weekend at 71, while Chip Allen carded a 73. Of note, Larry Goldsmith, playing the forward tees in the senior division, shot 72 on Sunday.

Rockland is a par-70 layout and Goose River par-72.

The tourney award winners were:

First flight — James Anderson, overall champion; and Chip Allen, first net.

Second flight — Mike Schroeder, first gross; Greg Jones, second gross; Mike Bonzani, first net; and Andy Arey, second net.

Bob Carter, who started the event, was the tournament director for the sixth straight year.

The first 18 holes were at the Goose River Golf Club in Rockport and final 18 holes at the Rockland Golf Club. A post-tourney banquet was held at Rockland.

Carter said he tried to add a third 18-hole round and day to the event at the Samoset Resort Golf Club or Megunticook Golf Club in Rockport, but those efforts did not work out.

The tournament was open to golfers from any club and area.

Carter said flights were determined by entries, but he expected to have, as it turned out, a few flights and a senior division divided into flights. There could have been junior and/or wpmen's flights but those did not materialize.

The entry fee was $70 for two days of golf and the banquet. As in the past, cart fees were the golfers' responsibility and pins, sweeps and other extra items was managed at each club.

The tourney continued to support PAWS and Knox County Humane Society with a donation from the proceeds, he said.

The tournament's main sponsor was Seacoast Security and media sponsor Courier Publications/VillageSoup.

Last year, James Anderson outlasted Chip Allen, the defending champion, by one stroke — 148-149 — for the overall title. Ricky Jones won in 2014 and 2016, Allen in 2017 and Anderson also in 2015.

In A Flight, Anderson finished first overall; Allen, second gross; Peter Lynch, first net; and Adam Wilcox, second net.

In B Flight, Greg Jones finished first gross; Mark Manzi, second gross; Sandy Ellsworth third gross; Roger Wickenden, first net; Jon Wickenden, second net; and Paul Quijano, third net.

For seniors, in the A Flight, Charles "Chum" Berry finished first gross; Charlie LeRoyer, second gross; Shane Grindle, first net; and Dean Sasek, second net.

For seniors, in B Flight, Tom Rowe finished first gross; Peter Smith, second gross; Dan Benson, first net; and Henry Garretson, second net.

Seniors hit from the forward tees and were not eligible for the overall championship.

Last year's field included 44 participants, of which a bundle were senior golfers. In fact, half the event's participants were ages 62 and older.

There also were no women in last year's field.

The course terrains are much different, which means participants needed to adjust their games from one day to the next.

Goose River is especially hilly, which often results in uneven stances, and mostly elevated greens. It always has many valleys, so substantial rain can make for tougher conditions.

Rockland, on the other hand, is more open with relatively flat greens. Both courses have smaller greens. Goose River is a nine-hole layout with different tees from one side to the other, while Rockland has 18 different holes.
