Anderson’s bridge series at Art Loft

Jul 01, 2017
“Le Pont Neuf, The New Bridge, #9” is part of a new series by Port Clyde painter Angela Anderson.

Rockland — An exhibit of recent paintings by local artist Angela Anderson will open with a First Friday Art Walk reception July 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Art Loft, 385 Main St. (Suite 9 in lobby level of Thorndike building). The show will continue through Aug. 27.

In April, Anderson made her first trip to Toulouse, France’s most Hispanic and fifth largest city, and fell in love with Le Pont Neuf, a bridge built in 1544 and strikingly wide for its time, while painting in the streets. It was the reflections it makes that captured painter Anderson’s fancy — the archways become full circles reflecting sunlight or electrical lights mounted on tall poles along the bridge’s walkways. Between the numerous archways, large circular openings allow overflow to pass through, making more pattern, structure and shapes.

That focus has become a full show of paintings and drawings of the bridge, on a larger scale than Lufthansa’s overhead compartment could contain. On view First Friday will be drawings, oil paintings, grisaille studies and palette knife paintings, techniques Anderson believes in as an art teacher. She teaches painting at the Art Loft on Mondays and leads Paint Nights two Friday evenings per month.

Rockland-born, Port Clyde resident Anderson has lived and exhibited in New York City and showed in Europe, with a solo exhibit in Germany. Martin Kippenberger included her work in The Museum of Modern Art Paris, in Cassel Germany and Museum Buymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Holland. She is the newest member of the Port Clyde Art Gallery, where new paintings from her Moby Dick inspired series are currently on view. For more information, visit angelaandersonpaintings.com.

Also at the Art Loft in July, marine painter Chuck Paine teaches a beginning watercolor class Tuesday afternoons; and he and his twin brother Art Paine offer a marine painting workshop, designed to teach artistic process in watercolor and oil with marine themes as a focus, Wednesday evening, July 12.
