Thomaston — After a one-year stint on the sidelines, one of the Midcoast's most anticipated, pre-Thanksgiving, fund-raising basketball games is on the rebound.

The Nathan Mitchell Alumni Basketball Games were an annual event for Georges Valley High School alumni prior to the school's consolidation with neighboring Rockland District High School to form Oceanside High School in 2011.

Now the Mitchell Games will return.

The games will be played on Wednesday, Nov. 21, with the Buccaneer alumnae to play at 5:30 p.m. and the GVHS alumni to tip off at 7 p.m. at Oceanside West, or the former GVHS in Thomaston. Oceanside East is the former RDHS.

The annual event is in honor of Nathan Mitchell, a student-athlete in then Maine School Administrative District 50, which included Thomaston, St. George and Cushing. Mitchell died, at age 15, in 2002 of brain cancer.

The Mitchell Games had been played for eight straight years prior to 2011.

Nathan's mother, Marion, along with GVHS alumni Lysha Smith and Rachel Campbell, are coordinating the event. Smith is a 1999 graduate, while Campbell graduated from the school in 2004.

Money raised from the event goes to the Nathan Mitchell Scholarship Fund, which, in turn, becomes college scholarships for Oceanside High School seniors.

"It's huge," said Smith, who now resides in Shelburne Falls, Mass., of bringing the Mitchell Games back "Last year there was a lot of change in that community, so for me to read [in the media] that it was being canceled was pretty tough for me, especially being a Georges Valley grad and there not being a Georges Valley [High School] anymore."

"It kind of brings together that community and the GV grads and gives them the sense of remembering where they came from," Smith said.

GVHS alumni who would like to participate should contact Smith by phone at 413-625-2180 or by email at GVHS alumnae who would like to participate should call Campbell at 691-5347 or email her at

The William Stinson Jr. Alumni Games, also a fund-raising event, has been the vehicle for RDHS alumni to return to play basketball each winter for several decades. Now GVHS has its alumni games back.
