Synagogue turns 100

Adas Yoshuron CD release, films, concert

Nov 20, 2012

Rockland — In celebration of its 100th anniversary, Adas Yoshuron will host a film screening and CD release party Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at the synagogue, 50 Willow St. Refreshments, featuring desserts from the synagogue's 100th anniversary cookbook, will be served. The evening is free, but attendees are asked to bring non-perishable donations for the AIO Food Pantry.

Highlighting this festive evening will be the release of the choir’s first recorded CD, featuring 19th century Eastern European Jewish liturgical music, a few modern pieces, and two pieces from Holocaust Remembrance Day. The liturgical music includes compositions by the late composer Hugo Weisgall, a longtime member, and other pieces sung by the choir, all under the direction of Dana Goldsmith. The choir will perform a number of pieces during the program and a short film by Camden filmmaker David Berez about the making of the CD will be shown.

Also screened will be “The Right Rabbi,” a 40-minute documentary made by Portland filmmaker Laura Val in 2004 about the congregation’s search for a rabbi with interviews of members and others. Val will be on hand for a Q & A session after the screening.

Copies of the CD and film will be available for sale, as will the “Adas Yoshuron Cookbook.” An unaffiliated, all-inclusive synagogue, Adas Yoshuron has been serving the Jewish community of Midcoast Maine since 1912. For more information, call 594-4523 or send email to
