8/18 Symposium Offers Guidance for End-of-Life Planning

By Denise Pease | Aug 11, 2014

Adults age 50-plus are invited to attend “Your Life, Your Choices: Advance Care Planning for End-of-Life,” a free, half-day symposium on Monday, August 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army on Route One in Rockland. Cosponsors include Pen Bay Healthcare members Quarry Hill, Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care & Hospice, the Picker Family Resource Center, Pen Bay Medical Center Palliative Care Program, and the Pen Bay Healthcare Foundation.

Organizers say the program will provide guidance for those needing to plan for the future care needs of themselves or loved ones to ensure that their wishes will be honored. Local experts will introduce and demystify the various medical, financial, legal, and practical matters that older adults should consider as they plan for their later years, including: advance directives, medical considerations, palliative vs. hospice care, financial and legal issues, funeral and burial options, and other concerns.

Among the speakers will be hospice/palliative care social worker Dorn McMahon of Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care & Hospice; MaineHealth medical director of palliative care David  Giansiracusa, MD; attorney Peter Warren of McKittrick & Warren; Alison Rector of the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Maine; interfaith minister Nancy McAlley; and Sarah Dwelley, RN, palliative care coordinator at Pen Bay Medical Center.

The day’s agenda will also include a showing of Consider the Conversation, a documentary on advance care planning, and an introduction to Sussman House, the new hospice house slated to open soon on the Pen Bay Healthcare campus in Rockport.

A free continental breakfast and buffet lunch will be served.

Registration by Thursday, August 14, is required. To sign up, call Quarry Hill at 230-6116.
