Friendship — Every year as part of Friendship Day, Long Haul (3.1 miles) and Short Haul (one mile) road races and walks are held. For some, the hauls always seem longer than for others.

That again was the case July 31 on a beautiful, hot mid-summer morning as runners/walkers of all ages participated in the 17th annual Long Haul 5-kilometer road race/walk and Short Haul children's event.

The Long Haul seemingly was not so long for overall winner Michael Bunker of Rockland, who blistered the course in 15 minutes and 46 seconds — for a per mile pace of just over five minutes. He outdistanced runner-up Jeff Sprague, who finished in 17:24, by a whopping 1:38. Those two were well ahead of the rest of the field.

The first female finisher was Katie Havener of Friendship in 22:09. She placed 11th overall.

Owen Jameson, 10, was the one-mile winner in 7:03.
