Salvation Army deploys new reusable grocery bags

Mar 13, 2020

Rockland — The Rockland Salvation Army has begun providing visitors to the Fresh Rescue food pantry with reusable grocery bags.

The bags are designed to provide produce to individuals and families living with food insecurity. Smaller than typical reusable grocery bags, The Salvation Army Fresh Rescue bag provides produce per visit while ensuring food resources are shared equitably.

Each household member is eligible to receive one reusable bag for free. If their bag is lost or damaged, a replacement bag can be purchased for $2. First National Bank provided $1000 to buy 500 Fresh Rescue bags.

“Partnerships with community businesses like First National Bank is the path to the elimination of hunger in Maine,” said Captain Keith Davis, Corps Officer of The Rockland Salvation Army. “There is enough food for everybody. The challenge is getting food to the people who need help, where and when they need it.”

The Rockland Salvation Army Fresh Rescue pantry is open Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. though 2 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon, and from 2 to 7 p.m. on most Sundays.

A community meal is also prepared and served at the Salvation Army on most Sundays at 5 p.m. Food assistance from the Fresh Rescue room is free and all are welcome. There is no prerequisite or paperwork.

“One in five children in Maine are food insecure,” said Sr. Business Development and Corporate Sales Officer Jake Miller. “Hunger in Maine can be solved, but it takes leadership and a broad agreement that everyone has a role to play in the solution. I am proud that our bank has made this commitment.”

The Rockland Salvation Army operates a thrift store that provides 80% of the financial resources needed to support community services that include food assistance, emergency disaster services, youth music and arts, teen mentoring and more. The store is currently undergoing renovations. A re-opening is planned for early spring.

The Rockland Salvation Army is at 27 Payne Ave., Rockland.
