Pine Tree Wrestling League season cancelled due to coronavirus

By Staff | Mar 13, 2020

The final weeks of the Pine Tree Wrestling League season – which affects five Midcoast middle school teams – has been cancelled due to the ongoing public health threat from COVID-19, also referred to as the coronavirus.

The mat campaign had been ongoing this month with the final regular-season meets scheduled for Saturday, March 14, followed by regional and league championship events in the coming weekends.

The halt in action affects young area student-athletes from Camden-Rockport Middle School of Camden, Oceanside Middle School of Thomaston, Medomak Middle School of Waldoboro, Troy Howard Middle School of Belfast and Mount View Junior High of Thorndike.

In a statement to sent to league member schools, Steve Patten, PTWL president, stated: "As you all know, the coronavirus has caused a major disruption across the world.

At this point, it is with great regret that I am cancelling the remainder of the season.

I considered waiting a week and trying to set up a season-ending tournament, but realized that would place many schools in a difficult position, and would go against what Governor [Janet] Mills is recommending of postponing gatherings of more than 250 people for the next 30 days.

I will be in touch with each of you in the coming week.

Thank you for your work throughout the season, and for your understanding about this difficult decision."

The league began on Saturday, Feb. 22 and was to see mat action through Saturday, March 28.

There were to be eight dates with regular-season meets, including crossovers between the West and East teams. The regional meets were to be on Saturday, March 21, with the West at Oxford Hills Regional High School in South Paris and East at Ellsworth High School.

The league championship meet was to be on Saturday, March 28 at Bucksport High School.
