Rockland — A Republican filed his intent to seek his party's nomination for the Maine House seat that represents Rockland and Owls Head.

Michael Mullins of Cedar Street registered Feb. 14 with the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices to seek the District 93 House seat.

Mullins is president of Mullins Management Company of Boston. He said he focused on affordable housing creation. Mullins submitted a proposal two years ago to buy and convert the former Mary E. Taylor property in Camden into a shared workspace for a number of trades including metalworking, woodworking and robotics, and would offer classes to adults as well as children.

He also operates an incubator building in Camden and in Winslow.

"I've been interested in state politics," Mullins said about his decision to seek the Maine legislative seat. "I'm interested in economic development and community development."

The seat is currently held by Democratic Rep. Anne "Pinny" Beebe-Center of Rockland. Beebe-Center announced last month she would not seek re-election. She is working on developing discharge plans for people who are released from the Knox County Jail.

Beebe-Center has served in the Maine House since being elected in March 2015, following the resignation of Democrat Elizabeth Dickerson.

Rockland City Councilor Valli Geiger, a Democrat, filed her intent Jan. 10 to seek the seat.

Geiger is serving her second term on the City Council, being elected in 2014 and 2017. She was also elected by her council peers to be its mayor in 2017. Her current term ends in November, and Geiger said she would not be running for Council.

No other candidates have filed for the District 93 seat.

Party candidates have until March 16 to file nomination papers with the Maine Secretary of State to formally be on the June 9 primary ballot. Un-enrolled candidates – also referred to as independents – have until June 1 to file nomination papers to get on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.

I like Valli Geiger. She does her research. She is doing something about protecting Rockland residents from cell towers being built in the future next to neighborhoods. She cares, she's smart and she listens attentively.

I did not read any of that. Would be interested if the paper would print it.

So...before anyone gets too excited about Mr. Mullins' candidacy, take a little time to witness what he did to the far end of Cedar Street. Talk to his neighbors. Read old articles about his idea of improving the Cedar Street property. Learn, learn, learn. We owe it to one another.
