A message from the owner

Dear Readers, Advertisers and Friends of the “The Free Press” and “Courier Publications/Village Soup,

We’re moving!

As the newspaper industry continues to change and morph, so do we here in Midcoast Maine.

In order to continue bringing you a quality weekly feature paper like “The Free Press” and your fine weekly “newspapers of record” in Rockland, Camden and Belfast (“Courier Publications”), with daily news via our “Village Soup” websites, we’ve decided to team up the Free Press and Courier Publications in one centralized building.

Combining facility resources reduces rent significantly as well as phone lines, internet connection, reception services, finance departments, and distribution of the papers.

Our staffs based at the Courier building, now located on Route 1 at the Breakwater Building in Rockland, and the Free Press building, now on North Main Street in Rockland, near Dunkin' Donuts and Wasses Hot Dogs, will relocate to the former Tibbets Building off Limerock Street in Camden in early November. (The staff of The Republican Journal will continue to cover Waldo County from its office at 156 High St. in Belfast.)

The papers will continue to operate autonomously with regard to editorial content and production, while sharing some resources in finance, distribution, customer service, etc. This will give us continued opportunities to serve our hometown communities in Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties.

We have also formed strategic partnerships with the Ellsworth American and Mount Desert Islander in Hancock County. This new location will be more centrally located to them as well, cutting down on our printing corridor and allowing for additional collaboration. Our new space has adequate parking and room for growth for both the Free Press and Courier/Village Soup groups, both difficult challenges in our current situation.

We expect to invite the community to an “Open House” in this newly renovated space in early 2020.

Thank you for supporting the journalism with your advertising and subscription support; we couldn’t do it without you!
