Thomaston — Carl "Chummy" Kitching Jr., passed away Oct. 17, 2019 at the Bob Gagnon Cancer Unit at Penbay Medical Center, after fighting a terminal illness.

Carl was predeceased by his father and mother, Carl M. Kitching Sr. and Lucy Kitching-Mixer of Rockland; nephew Billy Lewis of West Rockport, and sister Beverly Lewis of West Rockport.

Chummy left behind his wife, Lesa, and son Adam Kitching of Thomaston. Carl was an alumni of Rockland District High School and at 18, he enlisted in the Vietnam War. He spent a year in Fort Hood, Texas for training, then was stationed in Cameron Bay, Vietnam. While there, he did mechanics and carpentry.

His father had the nickname "Kitch," and Kitch coined the name Chummy for Carl because of how he described his son. Chummy was more than a chum, he was a wonderful son, father, husband and uncle; we always told people he had a heart of gold, and many said he was like a magnet because he just drew people to his amazing personality.

He loved carpentry and for years, he worked for Barley Woodworking in Camden. Chummy also enjoyed doing finished carpentry as he did a few restorations on homes built in the 1800's. Carl worked for Manset Marine in Rockland, where he was head foreman for the supplies. He took interest in boats as well as carpentry due to his late grandfather, Ami Sewall, being a captain for the Socconi Oil Tankers.

Later he was hired at Moss Tent Inc. in Camden, where they made specialized tents for extreme weather conditions and also Pena wings. After a few years, Moss Tent moved to Belfast and there, Carl worked on tents, then they went into exhibits for NASA, automobiles, and Olympics. He was quite proud of his time during the NASA exhibits. He will be missed. There will be only a private family committal.
