Rockland — A 16-unit downtown apartment complex with a questionable reputation is undergoing a significant renovation that its new manager says includes a re-branding.

The overhaul of the 18 Lindsey St. complex is expected to be completed this summer.

The complex is owned by 18 Lindsey St. LLC, with its principal owner a Jackson, Wyo., resident. But the apartment building is being managed by Jim Leach of Jimmy's Real Estate Management.

The apartments are all vacant as the transformation continues.

Leach said the apartment complex had been the source of many calls to police over the years.

"The first time I drove in the parking lot, I saw tomato plant, pot plant, tomato plant, pot plant lining the outside," Leach said.

"Lindsey Street use to be the last stop for many people," Leach said of tenants who had been evicted from other apartments.

The re-branding of 18 Lindsey St. begins with the name -- the residences will now be known as Abode Rockland. There will be eight one-bedroom residences and eight efficiency units.

And the overhaul includes a complete renovation of the interiors of the 1977-built building. The flooring is being replaced. Shaker-style cabinets and woodwork are being installed.

Larger windows are being installed and the solid doors are being replaced with doors that have a window.

LED lighting and new plumbing, along with stainless-steel appliances, are also part of the renovated apartment complex. There will also be some exterior work and landscaping.

" We want to make it part of the community," Leach said.

The rents will be affordable, he said, at $925 for the efficiencies and $1,050 for the one-bedrooms. This includes heat, electricity, wifi, laundry, snow removal, lawn care and trash removal.

Smoking and pets will not be allowed, he said.

He said decades ago a landlord could slap down linoleum and paint everything white and the apartments would rent. He said many would-be tenants today want something better. Leach maintained there is not a shortage of housing, but a shortage of housing that meets the renters' standards.

He said there has already been interest in the units from people moving to the area.

A long time ago, when the world was flat and dinosaurs pulled fire trucks, I responded with RFD to a fire in one of the rear downstairs apartments. Made entry with A/C David Vanorse followed up by then I believe Lt. Charlie Jordan...We kept it to the one unit...Nice stop....Glad to see the rehab..

Many thanks to 18 Lindsey LLC for your increasing investment in Rockland.   Jim is the right man for the job.

That price is not just the rent.  The other items included would probably cost a person about $200/month if he/she had to add on.  Jim did not mention water or sewer but he may be including that as well. We have gotten used to everyone having their own place, but 100 years ago it was one place with 3-4 generations.  It may be that people need to look for house sharing opportunities.
