Martin Luther King Jr. visits Saint Francis College in Biddeford, May 1964. King and other civil rights leaders spoke at the college as part of a symposium on human rights. He spoke at Bowdoin college the day before, and delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in August the year prior. This year Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 16.

The night before Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, he said in a speech that he was not concerned about death because he had been to the top of the mountain and seen the promised land.

“I may not get there with you,” he said. “But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.”
