Gooney and his friends are safe yet hopeful during these times

From the desk of Executive Director Tracy Sala, It’s a bit strange here at the shelter. Not quiet, as the dogs still bark and the phone still rings, now more than ever, but…empty. We are being cautious and safe by following the recommendations of the CDC. So, our doors are closed to the public, we have limited staff and we asked the volunteers to stay home for their safety. Which, I have to say, is difficult for …

Diesel needs a patient, dedicated dog lover to give him a happy home

From the desk of PMHS Volunteer Coordinator, Kelly Gould, I’m still having a hard time believing it is 2020! Hopefully everyone’s resolutions included some thoughts for our homeless animals in the upcoming year. We hope this is the year you will adopt a shelter pet, send a generous donation, or perhaps become a shelter volunteer. Our next volunteer orientation will be held here at the shelter Saturday, Feb. 1, at …

Despite Flash's 'Bah humbug' expression, he needs a home with laughter.

From the desk of Events Coordinator, Kasey Bielecki, It’s that time of the year, time to license your dog! In order to obtain a license for your dog, you must present a current State of Maine Rabies Certificate obtained from a veterinarian. On Saturday, Jan. 11 from noon to 2 p.m., Pope Memorial Humane Society will be offering a low-cost rabies vaccination clinic in the community room of the shelter. Dr. Mimi …

All Roman wants for Christmas is a family who loves to play ball

From the desk of PMHS volunteer coordinator, Kelly Gould, As a volunteer coordinator, I spend a fair time out in our kennels leading canine playgroups and training dog walkers. While I am there, I get to watch as customers come into the kennel area to look at dogs and I have started to notice a pattern. A dog catches a person’s eye, they stop outside the kennel to say “hi” and perhaps toss the dog a treat. The …

From Bahamas to Maine, Isabel is searching for her forever home

From the desk of PMHS Events Coordinator, Kasey Bielecki, ‘Tis the season of giving. Due to its popularity last year, we have brought the Pet Angel Tree back to Pope Memorial Humane Society. It’s pretty simple. Stop into the shelter during our open hours and pick a tag off the tree in our community room. Cat, dog, rabbit, guinea pig, there are a lot of options. Each tag has a few items listed that will make the …

Lillian is quite the diva, perfect for holiday photos!

From the desk of PMHS Volunteer Coordinator, Kelly Gould, Hopefully the weather has improved by the time this column is published. But as I write, the temperature is in the ‘teens, and a stiff north wind is whipping through the parking lot. It feels a lot more like mid-January than mid-November here at Pope Memorial. Despite the cold and the icy roads, our shelter volunteers are in full gear. Volunteers in the …

On Nov. 30, 50 Maine based crafters and artisans will set up at the Rockland Elks Lodge for the 40th Annual Festival of Lights Craft Show. Things that will be sold include sugar and salt scrubs, …

Newly-trained pups looking for a home

Our pet picks of the week are Star, Loki, Jemma and Krash, four dogs that are nearly ready to graduate from our K-9 Corrections program at the Maine State Prison where they have been learning manners, basic commands and even a few tricks. The inmates/handlers have been training them for eight to 12 weeks at the prison under the guidance of our trainer Marie Finnegan from K9 Solutions Dog Training. Now, the dogs …
