Away with winter, maybe The wonder of bare ground and the tempting lyrics of an early spring have Mainers behaving like ancient mariners lured by the calls of the charming sirens, only to be wrecked on the gardens of frozen seedlings. Despite the warming sun and the compliant earth breaking free from its winter grip, it’s just not time to pull out the spade. Do not, we are advised, plant those peas yet. (Though …

What a winter. Not. Daffodils are poking up in Lincolnville as an early spring is tempting us in too many ways. The weekend saw a lot of folks outside, not skiing, but raking and poking at the garden dirt, as if it were April, not February. In Lincolnville, the community was out Feb. 20, making a festival of winter at Breezemere Park and Norton Pond, or up the road at the Cellardoor Winery. People played …

Warming days The cat is on the prowl these days, what with warmer nights that hint of spring. The sunny days are heating decks, and cats, like the wildlife, are afoot. Civic-minded reader has palindrome stats on radar The palindromically inclined are weighing in on the Black Cat’s palindrome of two weeks ago, when that linguistic lynx observed that Monday, Jan. 11 was a palindrome — no, not the day that marks the start of the workweek but the date: 01-11-10. To write the day a little differently, the second day of the year also fell into the category: 01-02-2010. A palindrome…

Same backward and forward Monday was a palindrome. No, not the day that marks the start of the workweek but the date: 01-11-10. To write the day a little differently, the second day of the year also fell into the category: 01-02-2010. A palindrome is a word, number or sequence that reads the same backward as it does forward. Looks like the next one on the calendar is 11-02-2011. Get cooking! The Georges …

Get (thinking about) gardening Now that the sun is heading back this way (supposedly, though we haven’t seen it through a week of snow showers), thoughts turn toward gardening. What better time to think green than in the depths of winter white. Somewhere beneath the veil of gray and white lie slumbering bulbs and seeds. Soon enough, some trees, such as poplar and birch, will even consider budding. Over at the …
