ROCKLAND — Join Penobscot Bay Language School and dance instructor Leticia Galván Cordova for a five-week Mexican folk dance session being offered this winter. Classes meet twice weekly (Saturdays and Thursdays). Each Saturday from 2-4 p.m. Señora Cordova will be offering group classes for all levels and ages. Each Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. PBLS will be open for practice sessions with Señora Cordova.

History, culture, regional identity, folktales and global influences are all aspects of Mexican dance culture that will be explored along with the movements and patterns of each culturally significant dance. Participants will learn about the numerous traditional dances that come from the various diverse cultural regions of the 31 states of Mexico. Furthermore, discussion about pre-colonial “danza,” the impact and legacy of colonialism, and postcolonial influences will help give a 360-degree understanding of the diverse cultural influences that make Mexico such a unique and beautiful place. More than just a dance class, this program is intended to be a deep dive into culture as a global theme.

Five-week sessions start the weeks of Jan. 16 and Feb. 20. Costs follow: $30/participant (5 weeks), $60/family (5 weeks), $50/participant (10 weeks), $100 / family (10 weeks).
