WALDOBORO — The sixth annual “Paws for the Cause” high school basketball games to benefit Maine Breast Cancer Charities will see Medomak Valley host the Oceanside Mariners of Rockland and Maranacook Black Bears Readfield.

“Paws for the Cause” will be on Monday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. (girls versus Maranacook) and Saturday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. (boys versus rival Oceanside).

The event will attempt to “pink out” the MVHS gymnasium and special pink uniforms will be worn by Panther players.

The MVHS athletic department, in conjunction with the Medomak Valley All-Sports Boosters, announces the events, the original concept of John and Gayle Murphy. Gayle is a breast cancer survivor and president of the Medomak Valley All-Sports Boosters.

The games are sure to again be a “full house,” as the Panther varsity squads attempt to “pink out” their gymnasium.

For the special games, the Panthers will wear unique pink uniforms. Additionally, commemorative T-shirts will be available for students and fans to purchase leading to the games and the night of the games.

In addition to T-shirt sales, other fundraising will take place prior to, and during, the games, as well as an opportunity to add a personalized pink paw to the wall for a $1 donation. The night’s 50/50 drawings and proceeds will go to the Maine Breast Cancer Charities in the Midcoast.

“We’re excited to build upon the overwhelming success of our five previous events,” said Gayle Murphy, event coordinator. “We’ve raised $26,500 for Maine Breast Cancer Charities over the past five years and hope to continue to build upon that this year.”
