THOMASTON — Registration for Down East Singers is now open for spring semester 2023. To register, please go to downeastsingers.org. The first rehearsal is Tuesday, Jan. 10; registration continues through Jan. 24. Rehearsals for the Easter portion (Parts II and III) of Handel’s “Messiah” are held Tuesdays from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. at Watts Hall, 174 Main St. The performance will be Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, at 5 p.m. at Watts Hall. Singers of all voice parts are welcome. Membership fees for spring semester are $80. There will be some scores available on loan.

The chorus is conducted by Anthony Antolini of Cushing. The accompanist is Jennifer McIvor or Wiscasset. The performance on Memorial Day will be accompanied by Mozart Mentors Orchestra and will feature professional soloists Erin Chenard, soprano; Jazmin DeRice, contralto; David Myers-Wakeman, tenor; and John David Adams, bass.

For choristers who have not previously sung with Down East Singers, a brief voice placement check is required to ensure that the singer is in the proper section. New singers are encouraged to come early to take care of this. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Sight reading skills are desired but not required, as long as an ability to match pitch correctly is demonstrated.

Down East Singers was founded in 1979 by Marion Gray and has performed masterworks from the Baroque to the contemporary period to wide acclaim. Their past performances can be viewed on the group’s YouTube channel.
