WARREN — Warren Select Board Chair Wayne Luce and Town Manager Sherry Howard presented Thursday, Nov. 17, the Boston Post Cane to the town’s oldest resident — Mary Lee Merrill.

Born on Dec. 6, 1925, Merrill came to Maine by way of Wilmington, Del. in 1988, and has lived in Warren for 19 years.

A member of the Daughters of Founders and Patriots, and the Maine Society of Mayflower Descendants, Merrill believes strongly in volunteerism and has served on several area boards and committees benefitting local charities.

The Boston Post Cane movement was started in 1909 by the Boston Post newspaper and quickly took off in those municipalities lucky enough to receive the canes. The tradition has continued in 700 municipalities throughout New England, honoring the oldest resident with a gold-tipped cane.

The town of Warren is pleased to appoint Merrill to this honorary position.
