No matter who gets your vote this election season, there’s a group of indefatigable individuals who have earned our endorsement: Maine’s town and city clerks and their staff.

They have been toiling for months and more to make sure that our state is a hallmark of the way voting — whether at the polls or via absentee ballots — should be: secure, easy, straightforward, and streamlined.

These defenders of democracy have been unfairly tarnished by shameful campaigns of misinformation that accuse them of fraud or worse. In fact, these are the true public servants who help secure the freedoms and rights we say we treasure.

Our responsibility as citizens and voters is to let clerks and their colleagues do the job entrusted to them… and to thank them for doing their essential work so earnestly and so well.
