AUGUSTA — The Big 11 Conference unveiled its high school football all-conference selections on Tuesday, Nov. 1, which resulted in good news for a bevy of Midcoast gridiron players and incredible news for a particular area player and coach.

Headlining the impressive list of more than two dozen players from Oceanside of Rockland, Belfast and Medomak Valley of Waldoboro was Mariner running back Aiden Sergent and first-year Mariner coach Sam Weiss, who were named player of the year and coach of the year.

Sergent, who was named first-team all-conference at running back and linebacker, rushed for 1,401 yards and 20 touchdowns during the regular season, along with three two-point conversions and one kick return for a touchdown. On defense, he registered 25 solo tackles, 33 assisted tackles and one interception, to go along with 3.5 quarterback sacks.

“Aiden is 100 percent deserving of this award,” said Weiss. “He’s definitely someone to be feared on the football field on both sides of the ball. When I took the job there was a ton of talk about how hard he’s been working in the offseason. It’s definitely paid off for him. He hasn’t missed a practice in or out of the season since I’ve been coach. Not to mention he’s a great person and student with A’s across the board. As a junior he has an extremely bright future ahead of him. I’m extremely proud of Aiden and can’t wait to see what he can do these next few weeks.”

Weiss added: “Getting coach of the year is great,” but he gave the credit to his players. “Their goal was to win a championship,” he said. “I’m only here trying to help them achieve that goal.”
