ROCKLAND — A woman was killed Thursday morning when she was struck by a pickup truck.

The crash occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. Oct. 27 at the intersection of Ocean and Suffolk streets in Rockland.

Lorraine Hall, 70, of Rockland, died from her injuries. The driver of the Ford pickup truck was Ronald Staples, 53, of Rockland.

Staples was coming from Water Street and Hall was on the edge of the crosswalk. There were no signs of intoxication or distracted driving on the part of Staples, Rockland Police Chief Tim Carroll said. He said the investigation continues but one thing being considered as a contributing factor is sun in the eyes of the driver.

There is a stop sign on Water Street at the intersection of Ocean Street. The truck crossed that intersection onto Suffolk Street where the crosswalk is.

The woman was in the road when emergency crews arrived within two minutes of the crash. She was next to a crosswalk that crossed Suffolk. The pickup truck was parked about 100 feet further up Suffolk Street.

Staples was distraught as he talked to police officers.

Chief Carroll said the woman was responsive when the first officer arrived.

A Maine State Police accident reconstruction expert arrived at about 10 a.m. Thursday and was taking measurements and planned to take aerial photographs by drone. Ocean Street was closed off, as were sections of Water and Suffolk streets as of 10 a.m.

The Ford pickup truck was still at the scene as of 10 a.m.

Accident reconstructions are conducted for fatal crashes.

Officer John Bagley is still investigating with assistance from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and a Maine State Police reconstructionist, with further assistance from Rockland Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

The City Council held a meeting in July 2021 on ways to improve pedestrian safety in Rockland. Education and changes to some intersections were recommended. The intersection of Suffolk and Ocean streets was not one of the intersections listed in the report.

Measurements are being taken at the scene of the pedestrian/pickup truck crash. The truck is pictured in the street.
