BELFAST — Cold, windy conditions and a 2.1-mile course still a bit wet and muddy from recent rains was no problem for more than 200 young distance athletes — especially Camden-Rockport Middle School and their individual champions Flynn Layton for girls and Will Meyer for boys — in the festive and fun-filled Busline League cross-country championship meet on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 21 at Troy Howard Middle School.

The Schooners nearly duplicated perfect scores — when a team’s first five scoring runners cross the finish ahead of any other school’s participants — in winning league titles. The CRMS girls did record a perfect score of 15 and boys were close at 18.

Layton finished first among 100 girls at 13:36.22 and Meyer first among 110 boys at 11:57.95. They are eighth graders.

Teams from Searsport to Wiscasset, which encompasses Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties, participated.

The schools in the league with cross-country programs include Great Salt Bay of Damariscotta, Oceanside of Thomaston, Boothbay Region, Islesboro, Medomak of Waldoboro, Wiscasset, North Haven, Camden-Rockport, Searsport, Lincolnville, Searsport, St. George, Appleton, Edna Drinkwater School of Northport and Troy Howard.

The girls team scores were: Camden-Rockport 15, Lincolnville 60, Drinkwater 99, Medomak 111, Great Salt Bay 131, Boothbay 145, Appleton 163. Other schools had representatives but not enough to compile a team score.

CRMS had the first five runners, as well as the seventh and eighth participants. The Schooners finished with a total time of 1:11:03.60 and average runner time of 14:12.72.

The boys team scores were: Camden-Rockport 18, Lincolnville 63, Great Salt Bay 92, Medomak 92, Oceanside 105, Boothbay 168, Troy Howard 198 and Appleton 225. Other schools had representatives but not enough to compile a team score.

CRMS had had the first, second, third, fifth and seventh runners, total time of 1:05:58.61 and average runner time of 13:11.73.

Interestingly, the top teams, CRMS and Lincolnville, feed into Camden Hills Regional High School in Rockport. The Windjammers typically challenge for league, regional and state titles. In fact, the CHRHS girls were unbeaten in the regular season this fall.

The Busline League scheduled 10 regular-season meets, two a week on Thursdays Sept. 15 through Oct. 13.
