SOUTH THOMASTON — A car was destroyed by fire Saturday morning.

The fire department was called out at about 5 a.m., Oct. 15, responding to a vehicle accident on Alley Way which is off Hill Street, Fire Chief Bryan Calderwood said.

The chief said the vehicle was engulfed in flames when he arrived. The vehicle was in the woods, just off the road. Crews confirmed there was no one in the vehicle.

Because of the extensive damage to the vehicle, a cause of the fire is undetermined, he said.

Three fire engines and an ambulance responded. Crews were able to clear the fire station by 8 a.m. after cleaning up equipment.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded. Sheriff Patrick Polky said the case has been referred to the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office.
