ST GEORGE — Mark was born March 19, 1940, in Ware, Mass. to Colonel Lisle Bartholomew and Vera Mensch Bartholomew. Diagnosed with aggressive cancer on Monday, Sept. 19, he died peacefully on Sept. 23, 2022, at the age of 82, surrounded by his family.

Mark graduated from (West) Anchorage High School and earned his B.S. in Marine Biology and Fisheries from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, where he was an active member of the national champion UAF rifle team and the alpine and Nordic ski teams. After college, he married his first wife Carole (Rollison) Warner, raising two daughters together in their 36-year union. Mark served more than 20 years in the U.S. Army, reaching the rank of major. Following “retirement,” he worked in real estate, commercial fishing, and as a tour boat captain with Kenai Fjords Tours in Seward, Alaska. In 1999, he married a second time, to his high school sweetheart, Betsy (Rockwell) Bartholomew. The couple spent 20 happy years together, fishing and traveling between Maine and Alaska. Very active in his community, Mark was always ready to lend a hand to friends and neighbors.

Predeceased by his wife Betsy, Mark is survived by his sister, Sue B. Wade of St. Albans, Vt.; his former wife Carole Warner of Tavares, Fla.; and his two daughters and Betsy’s two sons, Laura Young, her husband Ty and their children Marin (Young) Wilson and Christian Young (Maryland and Texas); Rebecca Marcoux, her husband Steven and their sons Joshua and Ryan of Foxborough, Mass.; John Bidwell, his wife Kris Holloway and their sons Aidan and Liam of Northampton, Mass.; and Jim Bidwell, his wife Ruth and their daughters Emma and Rachel of Penacook, N.H.

The family is grateful for the support of numerous friends and community members who cared for Mark, especially Hale Miller and Joan Small; sister-in-law Merle Rockwell and her husband, Ed Modell; Betsy’s cousin Chris Cook and his wife Annika and their son, Alexander; Joe and Rachel Baldwin; and Jack Scoby.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Oct.29, 2022, at the Broad Cove Community Church in Cushing. The Rev. Anne Roundy will officiate.
