WALDOBORO — A large, spirited crowd showed up for Medomak Valley High School’s homecoming football game against Nokomis of Newport on Friday night, Sept. 16 to see for themselves if the 2022 Panthers were as talented as their first two results indicated.

It turns out the Panthers are for real and are good — real good.

For the third straight week to start the campaign, the Panthers dominated an opponent, this time in a 35-6 home victory in front of a significant group of usual fans and alumni.

Medomak Valley is 3-0 and has outscored opponents 117-12.

On Friday night, the Panthers received a yeoman performance from Hayden Staples, who finished with 17 carries for 167 yards and two touchdowns.

Additionally, on offense for MVHS, Aaron Reed (12 carries for 42 yards, touchdown), Wyatt Simmons (1-of-3 passing for 27 yards, TD, interception), Blake Morrison (catch for a 27 yard, TD), Anthony Francis (75-yard kickoff return for TD) and Jaiden Starr (5-of-5 on extra-point kicks) played significant roles.

On defense for the Panthers, Tucker Holgerson (3 solo tackles, punt block, quarterback sack), Aaron Reed (6 solos, assist), Marshall Addy (6 solos, assist, sack, forced fumble), Gatlin Bedenik (6 solos, 2 assists), Colby Ridegly (4 solos, assist), Isaac Simmons (7 solos, 2 assists), Staples (7 solos, assist, forced fumble), Porter Gahagan (5 solos, 2 assists, sack), Sam Moody (2 solos), Jaiden Starr (3 solos), Blake Morrison (solo) and Chase Peaslee (solo) led the charge.

“The homecoming crowd was phenomenal,” said Panther coach Ryan Snell. “Defensively, Gatlin Bedenik and Gabe Lash did a great job on Madden White, one of the top receivers in our league. We knew we might sacrifice some on the run game, but he was our focal point and they executed. We have a lot of things we need to clean up and we got a bit sloppy at times. Almost 100 yards in penalties and that’s just unacceptable. We’ll have a good talk Monday and fix some things as we prepare for a very good Freeport team [5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Freeport].”
